To borrow from Ddrak:
In 2001, 21-year-old Shawn Woolley (search), a Wisconsin man who suffered from epilepsy, depression and schizoid personality disorder ,moved back in with his mother and quit his job.

Not long afterward, he killed himself over a personal betrayal — in the EverQuest world.
Anything is addictive if you have a personality predisposed to having an addiction. Yes, there are people addicted to EverQuest. Woolley obviously had other problems, but everybody will point to a video game when discussing it and not something like say, lack of therapy or shitty parenting.

Every year they have a story about EQ, and other games and there addictive ness. I bet most of the people writing them have never played a computer game. Otherwise they would put a little common sense in there stories. /sigh
I'm a crackhead but ya dont see me getting a rifle and blowing my head off. EQ is an addiction yes, but it can only emphasize RL problems rather then be one. imo

Parents should be thankful their kids are playing EQ and not something evil and destructive like Dungeons and Dragons

It's up to the gamers to prioritize their lives responsibly, they (SOE) insist.
100% correct. It is not someone elses job to babysit you while you feed or flee from your addiction. I played too much, and i don't miss it as much as i would like to have beleived i would.

All things in moderation ?

I agree with you 100% Ari - I played and played and played for years. Every now and then I find myself back in that non-stop, race to get home rat-race to start another group, lead another raid, or just simply sit there and chat with "friends." I took a break over the holidays and found that I didn't miss it quite as bad as I thought I would.

That's the thing that lets me know it's no longer an addiction. When I was 100% addicted to EQ, I couldn't get enough, called into work sick, quit law school, and a myriad of other things. Now, if I log on, I log on, if I don't, well...they'll get over it. (whoever "they" might be)

I've talked with Liz Wooley.

No, really.

I went over to OLGAnon and told her I thought she was doing a disservice to the spirit of what twelve-step programs are all about. She positions herself as the leader of a twelve-step program, but at the same time crusades against these games, accusing them of deliberately fostering addiction.
The Twelve Traditions of AA wrote:10. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.
So I told her she was violating both of those Traditions and she should take steps to rectify that, either by disassociating herself from OLGA or by ending her crusade. She couldn't do both and adhere to the Traditions which OLGA adopted. I also pointed out links on her site that violated the same Traditions.

She said she'd do something about the links, but never did.

I quit law school because I no longer had the drive to be an attorney. Loss of drive was due to me playing EQ till all hours of the night and not wanting to study/go to class. However, that is TOTALLY MY fault and not Sony's.

Gwil and I talked to Liz Wooley too. That woman's a fucking nutcase.
EQ2 has the same draw on me that EQ1 did when I first started. I'm currently without internet in the new apartment (Posting from work here) and even though EQ2 is still a new game to me I'm not really missing it. I just don't understand how people can develop psychological addictions. I'm a fucking stoner, and even I'm not so lazy as to sit at my computer and starve instead of cooking dinner. I mean, how pathetic do you have to be when you'll endure hunger rather than leave a group? EQ will still be there when you come back...

I know when my group is gonna log in (for the most part) and if they're not on i don't really have the drive to log into WoW and continue with other quests. We will sometimes all log in and be in group and do our own thing, but i don't miss WoW when i'm not in it either

However all the years in eq really took something out of me, i always said i just didn't have the heart to play EQ like i used to or to put into another game what i put into EQ for so long, seems i was right.

DAMN YOU SONY AND BLIZZARD IT IS 2:30 AM AND I AM AWAKE CAUSE I WAS PLAYING YOUR DAMN GAME !

you are a stoner and not too lazy to cook? Fuck that.......
thats why theres a phone next to your computer so when you are baked and playing EQ you can call pizza hut. Maybe theyll start delivering right to your computer than to your door. One can only dream i guess.
