Gary Gygax dies

Post by Embar Angylwrath » Tue Mar 04, 2008 2:21 pm

Gygax was responsible for the creation of Dungeons and Dragons. Without him, there probably would have been no Everquest which traces its roots back to the game.

Farewell Gary, may you roll crits through eternity.

Listen I have nothing but respect for the man who helped form the gaming genre that I love.....but Dave Arneson had every bit as big of an impact on the formation of D&D and TSR as Gygax did......and probably tempered Gygax a lot as Gary had a well deserved rep as a "killer DM"...."Tomb of Horrors" anyone?

His 'rep' was wholly earned by people not being observant in his dungeons.

And when Arneson passes we will have a similar tribute as well.

It took both of them to create the game. Without either one of them it would not have become what it did. So I can say that Without Gygax, I wouldn't know about two thirds of my friends. I would never have met my wife, etc etc. And all over the world people came together and formed friendships thanks to this man.

I know people are sentimental when people die, but because I had a couple friends in the industry, I've always thought this guy was a bit shady and screwed over a lot of folks to earn his title.

Some links....

Essentially, Gygax decided to steal the full credit for the game, and was largely successful. He went so far as to completely dissolve companies, friendships, and game lines, then forced through a settlement where he made himself known as the father of DnD and downplayed any contribution made by anyone else. He used Dragon as his own personal soapbox, made a ton of fucking money by marketing himself as part and parcel with the brand, and was, in the end a douche.

When your wife's thoughts of you after your death is that you were "stubborn"...yeah, you might have been a douche.

A friend in the industry posted this..
The RPG industry has been, for a long time, a really shady place where it was tough to get paid, tough to get credit, and tough to get published. I've got a few friends who've been in the industry, some of whom got out, some of whom are still in. Mel had a client who hummed and hawed for YEARS before finally paying up what they owed, and freelance writers have it even worse. So many people contributed to the monster that was DnD, but Gygax under the banner of TSR fucked them out of royalties, bylines, and even killed rival game companies with similar fantasy world premises either through lawsuits, or buying them up and then neglecting/absorbing them.

You're essentially saying Gygax was the Bill Gates of the RPG world. Probably accurate, but without him the RPG world would still be a directionless mess.

Not really. Go out and purchase the original Tomb of Horrors and tell me you can get through that dungeon at the recomended level with the "typical" D&D character build and magic. No freaking way you make it against all of the traps let alone a damn demi-lich.

Partha if you grew up in northern IL then you know yer talkin out yer ass. Hell I grew up in SE Wisconsin barely a stones through from Lake Geneva where TSR was headquartered. Gen Con was held yearly at Parkside University where I graduated until it got to big and moved to Milwaukee. I used to hang with a lot of Garys friends and talk.

Good point, but I doubt we'll be all sentimental when Bill Gates gacks.

I would actually harken Gygax to Steve Jobs rather than Bill Gates. Gygax was a good "idea man" who couldn't really grasp what his company was actually good at "making rules for games" and so focused on the wrong things and defended his "turf" with legal attacks. Much in the same way Jobs could never understand that Apple's stregths revolved around their OS rather than their ability to crank out computers. Argueably had Apple tried to dominate the OS/software side.....there wouldn't have been a Microsoft.....and if Gygax had liscenced the D20 system.....a lot of other gaming companies would have not existed.

I was under the impression that Gygax was just a terrible businessman. Good creatively, sucking the pie at the business end.
